Settlement for primary principals

Following strike action that saw primary and intermediate teachers disengage from the Ministry of Education, a new offer has been received.

Principals voted to ratify the proposed settlement on the 20th August.

What's in the settlement for primary principals?

Key components of the settlement:

  • Pay parity with secondary principals across the roll, staffing and decile components of remuneration, with this being entrenched through a unified pay system

  • U1 rolled into U2 on the pay scale

  • Additional funding to ensure at least two adults in every school during the school day

  • Beyond an initial increase to achieve parity, there is a 3% per annum pay increase for three years on the roll and staffing components of remuneration

  • A one-off $1,500 (before tax) payment to NZEI Te Riu Roa members

  • An annual $300,000 professional development fund for primary principals

  • A three-year term for the agreement

  • The accord remains part of the terms of settlement. The accord will focus on appraisal, teacher only days, wellbeing, workload and the complexity of the principal role.

  • This offer does not include the limited additional CRT for U1 and U2 principals as offered previously

  • Increase of 13% for principals of U1 schools

  • Increase of 4.8% for principals of U2 schools

  • Increase of 5% for principals of U3 and above schools

 

Decile payment:

  • Increase of 15.7% for principals of decile 1 to 4 U1 schools

  • Increase of 2% for principals of decile 1 to 4 U2 and above schools

 

Staffing based component:

  • Increase of 5% for all principals leading schools with total teacher staff of less than or equal to 13.

  • Increase of 4.8% for all principals leading schools with total teacher staff of greater than 13.
26 August 2020 Roll based component:

  • Increase of 3% for all principals

  • Increase of 3% for all principals
26 August 2021 Roll based component:

  • Increase of 3% for all principals

Staffing based salary component

In addition to the school roll-based salary component specified in clause 5.2.2, the salary of principals shall include the staffing-based salary component calculated according to the following formula:
