November 1 pānui: Upcoming hui, Kaiako Māori Network, and how to win your claims!
Kia ora koutou,
We are back in bargaining on November 2 and 3 and we will be discussing all the claims, including sick leave, Head Teacher relativities, the Reliever Pay Cap, and Te Reo/Tikanga Unit. Our team are ready to receive an offer that meets the needs and expectations of Kindergarten Teachers!
First ever Kaiako Māori Network hui & how to get involved
On Wednesday 19th October we held our first Kaiako Māori Network hui. This was a productive session where members set goals for the Te Reo/ Tikanga claim and discussed how to ensure the offer includes a win related to this claim. This was an awesome event, and the first of its kind in kindergarten!

For any kaiako Māori keen to get involved and stay in loop please join your colleagues in the Māori Kindergarten Teachers Aotearoa Facebook group.
Reliever pay claim posters! Available now to print & display at your centre:
We’ve collected over 370 pictures in support of the reliever pay claim – this shows our power to employers! Thank you to everyone who took the time to send in a picture. All of your submissions have been compiled into two posters which we encourage you to print and display in your centre. Click here to download the reliever pay claim posters.
And a reminder you can also still get your hands on our Head Teacher posters! Click here to download the Head Teacher posters.
What’s next?
- We need to keep the pressure on! We only win the offer we want by showing members are prepared to step up and demand it. We have 2,587 members and we all need to use our voices.
- We are planning Paid Union Meetings from 21 November to 1 December. Please save the date and we will email out the registration details soon. It’s even more important to attend these meetings because we are expecting the Ministry to make an offer, including on pay as part of the public sector unions’ unified pay negotiations, for you to discuss and vote on.
- We are also holding hui ahead of the Paid Union Meetings for Worksite Reps, Relievers, Head Teachers and Kaiako Māori – click here to register.
- Last time we met with the employers the negotiation team felt we hadn’t made enough traction on our claim for additional sick leave. To add to our evidence supporting the claim, please fill in the Hauora survey! If you have any questions about this survey, check out these FAQs.
