What does the issue of sick leave mean for you as a teacher, and the tamariki you teach?

With the growing increase of sickness with the borders newly opened we are having increasing exposure to many viruses. In ECE we have more chance of catching viruses from the tamariki that we work with due to the close nature of our job yet we have less sick leave entitlement than our peers in the Primary and Secondary Sector and do not have disregarded sick leave available either.

What will it take to fix sick leave for kindergarten teachers?

Increase the amount that we have available to align with Primary and Secondary.

When we fix sick leave, what impact will that change have on you as a teacher, and the tamariki you teach?

It means that if I am sick I can actually take the time necessary to heal rather than stressing about running out of leave. Which in turn benefits tamariki as teachers are still being forced to work while unwell due to the impact of leave and the lack of relievers available as well.
