We’re exposed to SO many colds and viruses.
What does the issue of sick leave mean for you as a teacher, and the tamariki you teach?
We’re exposed to SO many colds and viruses. If my sickness doesn’t happen to fall over a weekend, I can end up using 3 sick days. That’s only 3 colds a year and doesn’t allow for hospital appointments or looking after sick kids, let alone a mental health day!
When I catch COVID again (or if I catch anything for the next 6 months), I’ll have to take leave without pay. I’m frustrated that non-kindergarten kaiako are being paid the $600 subsidy, but I’m not!
What will it take to fix sick leave for kindergarten teachers?
15 days a year plus paid leave for COVID isolation.
When we fix sick leave, what impact will that change have on you as a teacher, and the tamariki you teach?
I’ll feel less resentful of parents sending sick children to kindy and/or not wearing masks. I’ll know that I can look after myself, my colleagues and my family by being able to take adequate sick leave and stay at home. I won’t have to worry about not being paid while I’m home sick.
